GISD & the Community

BEST FoundationBEST Logo

As a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit community organization, the BEST Education Foundation generates and distributes resources to support and enrich education for all students in the Garland Independent School District. The foundation supports the district by providing grants for programming to enhance educational excellence. Funding does not replace or alter use of funds from traditional tax-based purposes. BEST also funds scholarships for teachers and other district professionals to work on advanced degrees or participate in professional development.

PTA/PTSA

The district’s educators are fortunate to have excellent parental involvement. All schools have either a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) or a Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). Boasting well over 27,000 members district-wide, the GISD Council of PTAs is one of the largest and most active PTA groups in the state of Texas. Collectively, PTA volunteers contribute nearly 700,000 hours of service to the students of Garland ISD each year. This generous gift of time equates to an “in kind” donation of thousands of dollars.

GISD & the March of Dimes

The Garland School District is very active in fundraising efforts for the March of Dimes and extremely proud of being ranked in the top ten nationwide for the 2005 March of Dimes campaign.  Last year, students and staff raised over $84,000.00!

The March of Dimes campaign is STUDENT DRIVEN! What an accomplishment for the students of GISD.

The top schools for 2005 were:

Garland High School - $8,132.26
Coyle Middle School – $4,398.38
Back Elementary School – $6,761.11

GISD sponsored over 200 walkers and was given the National “2005 WalkAmerica Achievement Award” in appreciation for raising over a quarter of a million dollars since 2001.

The GISD March of Dimes campaign is under the direction of Eva Hummel, who is the key to organizing a successful campaign through educating, motivating, guiding and inspiring the GISD team captains across the district.

Our goal this year is $100,000 for the district and to be #1 in the United States!

We at GISD continue to make a difference for the March of Dimes.
