Middle school magnet programs

Academy for Excellence

Our Academies for Excellence program for grades 6-8 is located at Austin Academy. Students who meet the minimum academic requirements (below) and/or are identified as musically and/or artistically talented may apply for this magnet program.

Academic program

Austin Academy offers advanced academic coursework called “Enriched Honors.” Courses in English, math, reading, social studies, and science are targeted to the needs of academically qualified students.

Requirements

  • 90 percentile+ on state-approved achievement tests
  • 90 percentile+ on state-approved ability test

Art and music program

Students interested in participating in enriched fine arts courses may apply to the Art and Music Program. A full range of fine arts offerings including band, choir, orchestra, piano, art, and theatre arts is available.

Requirements

To qualify for the art and music program, students must attend a performance assessment. Art and Music Magnet seats are filled with the highest scoring students.

Classical

Enriched curriculum with an emphasis on Latin, Piano, and the Arts

Students working in the science lab.

For students with an interest in classical studies, Garland ISD offers magnet programs at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Middle school (grades 6, 7 & 8)

At the middle school level, in addition to the magnet classes offered at the elementary level, programming expands to include dance and gymnastics in the magnet curriculum. The Classical Center at Brandenburg Middle School offers the traditional and honors/Pre AP curriculum with an emphasis on Latin and literature. In addition to the piano, dance, and gymnastics courses, the school offers a full range of fine arts courses including band, choir, art, and theatre arts.

Requirements:

  • 50 percentile+ on reading and math achievement tests
  • Pass STAAR
  • Pass all subjects on report card
  • No serious discipline issues

Qualifying students are entered into a lottery, and openings are filled in the order in which they are drawn. Qualifying incoming sixth grade students from the Classical Center at Vial are automatically accepted. Students in good standing from the Classical Center at Brandenburg are automatically accepted in the Classical strand of the College and Career magnet program at Lakeview Centennial High School.

Global Business Language & Leadership

The School of Global Business, Language & Leadership is a magnet program that provides students with course options that will expand their understanding of global business, grant opportunities to learn languages that will make them more competitive, and provide them with a foundation that will assist them when they transfer to high school. The following are innovative aspects of this program:

  • Business elective classes that may provide high school credit
  • Language course options, including Mandarin Chinese
  • Leadership development through community service activities
  • Problem based learning activities that connect class instruction to real world applications
  • Summer learning experiences

Math, Science, Technology (MST)

Technology-enhanced learning with a special emphasis on Math and Science

For students with a high interest in math, science and technology, Garland ISD offers magnet programs at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Middle School (grades 6, 7 & 8)

For 6th-8th grade students enrolled in the MST program, courses use honors level curriculum enriched through extensive computer use.

Students work in cooperative groups for “real world”, hands-on problem-solving. In the school technology lab, students discover the excitement and promise of technology as it relates to everyday work and leisure.

Math, science and technology classes utilize various technology including Apple MacBooks, iPads, iPod touch, Smart board technology, TI-Navigator, Flip video, as well as PC laptop computers.

Requirements

  • 75 percentile+ on reading and math achievement tests
  • Pass STAAR
  • Report card grades of 80+ in math and science
  • Pass all other subjects on report card
  • No serious discipline problems

Qualifying students are entered into a lottery, and openings are filled in the order in which they are drawn.

Qualifying incoming sixth grade students from Beaver or Watson Technology Centers are automatically accepted to Jackson Technology Center.

Students who wish to continue their MST learning experience after completing eighth grade may choose to enter the magnet program at North Garland High School.
