High School Scheduling

The daily scheduling system in place at your high school may impact your options when making course selections.

Under both block and trimester scheduling in GISD, certain courses associated with special programs (fine arts, athletics, CTE internships or career preparation programs, etc.) receive special attention in the scheduling process. For example, students participating in football or basketball on most block and trimester campuses are scheduled into an athletic period during the school day every day all year long.

This printable schedule planning chart may useful to help you create your four-year plan for high school. If you plan to be involved in one or more special programs during high school, you may need to consider additional credit opportunities.

Block Scheduling

Five of the GISD high schools utilize "alternating block" scheduling. An alternating block schedule has a total of eight class periods with four 90-minute class periods on A days and four 90- minute class periods on B days (A days and B days alternate throughout the school year). The school year is divided into 2 semesters with 3 grading periods in each semester. Each school year, students can earn a maximum of 8 full credits (16 semester credits) on this schedule. Trimester Scheduling

Two of the high schools utilize "trimester" scheduling. A trimester schedule has a total of five 65-minute class periods each day. The school year is divided into 3 trimesters with 2 grading periods in each trimester. Each school year, students can earn a maximum of 7.5 full credits (15 semester credits) on this schedule.
