Garland High School - Gifted & Talented Programs

International Baccalaureate Program

Garland Independent School District provides identified gifted and/or talented students a rigorous curriculum. The International Baccalaureate Program at Garland High School is designed to provide a broad liberal arts experience for the college-bound student. Each student will become proficient in language and mathematics studies, the two most important tools of communication and analysis. Additionally, students will participate in an in-depth exploration of the study of human behavior and the process of educational inquiry. The resulting educational experience will provide the student with a well-rounded, advanced academic course of study emphasizing the development of the total individual. The IB Diploma and/or IB exams may qualify students for credit at the university level. Participation in the International Baccalaureate program begins with the preparation courses at the freshman/sophomore level. Course work at this level emphasizes higher levels of thinking and critical analysis. Junior/ Senior level International Baccalaureate courses focus on advanced university level curriculum, guided course work, and preparation for externally moderated exams.

For specific information about this program, contact Juanita Sacco, IB Coordinator, Garland High School at (972) 494-8492.

North Garland High School - The Math, Science, and Technology Program

The Math, Science, and Technology Program at North Garland High School is designed to prepare high-achieving students for advancement in an ever-changing technological world. Students receive interactive multimedia instruction using an integrated curriculum, which focuses on both problem-solving and practical applications in math and science.

This approach is designed to accelerate students in math, science, and technology and better prepare them for college or employment. Many courses unique to the North Garland Magnet offer opportunities to earn college credit in addition to earning high school graduation credits (dual credit classes).

MST students select a concentration of studies from areas such as computer science, telecommunications, medical studies, comprehensive science, and engineering. Each of these concentrations culminates with a "capstone" course designed to give students advanced academic and real-world experiences in the identified fields and support their efforts to receive the Distinguished Achievment diploma.
