Formal art instruction is offered at the elementary level at Kimberlin Academy, Hillside Academy, Walnut Glen Academy and The Classical Center at Vial. In addition to regular classroom instruction, these campuses also service the students who are gifted in art and music. Art instruction is provided at other elementary campuses by PTA-sponsored art instructors and classroom teachers.

At the middle school level, students are introduced to basic design, methods and materials. Student work in several processes including painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics and printmaking.

In high school, students begin with preliminary art classes, studying two-dimensional design, perspective, drawing, color theory, painting, printmaking, and progressing to three-dimensional design including ceramics, sculpture, and textile. Students also explore the historical and cultural contexts in which many artworks are created.

From there, interested students can choose to specialize in painting, drawing, ceramics and sculpture, graphics and printmaking, or textiles and fibers.

College level Advanced Placement courses are also offered in the History of Art and Art General Portfolio. Students may enroll in the International Baccalaureate art program at Garland High School.

Each spring, students from all of the art programs across the district have an opportunity to share the skills they have developed with the community by participating in the annual GISD Art Show. You will find the dates and locations of this show posted on the Fine Arts Calendar.

In the News

  • Bussey MS Advanced Art students participated in the school Talent Show in November this year. Art teacher extra ordinaire, Kim Winnubust, decided it would be great if other students could see talent unfolding a creation before their eyes. She helped students rehearse for two weeks and then they presented the creation of an owl painting in 6 minutes while the music Heaven by Angels and Airwaves was played. These eighth graders are a talented group and obviously work well together as a team. These are skills they will take to the work place as they graduate from high school in a few years.
