Fine Arts Department
Choir
Students in the GISD begin to participate in choral activities in the elementary grades. Not only are there outstanding choirs at each elementary campus, but students have an opportunity to audition for and participate in the All-City Boys and Girls Choirs.Although the exact course offerings vary from campus to campus at the middle school level, students are given an opportunity to participate in treble and mixed choirs at the sixth grade level. After the initial year, students are assigned to either Mixed, Treble, or A Cappella Choirs based on their mastery of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. In addition to further development of their basic fundamental skills, these choirs offer a variety of performance opportunities including concerts, community events, and UIL contests. Students are also encouraged to participate in individual events such as Solo & Ensemble Contest and All-Region Choir tryouts. Courses in choral studies at the high school level include Treble, Mixed and A Cappella Choirs and Vocal Ensemble. Each student must complete an audition which demonstrates his/her mastery of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and is then placed in the level-appropriate choir.
The performance opportunities for the various choirs include concerts, community performances, and contests. Students are also encouraged to participate in individual activities such as UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest, All-Region, Area, and State Choir Tryouts.
