Fine Arts Department
Theatre Arts
Look for GISD Theatre Arts Performances on the Fine Arts Calendar.
Students can choose from two avenues of specialization - the acting program and the technical program.
Acting Program
Students begin by exploring methods of artistic expression, the personnel and organization of the theatre, and the structure of the written play script. Through performance and production, students build on their speaking, writing, and reading skills. From here, the young thespians can go on to study acting, directing, and play analysis.
Technical Theatre
Students begin by discovering the backstage world of the theatre. They learn about stage terminology, lighting, sound, costumes, make-up, set building, and publicity. From this foundation of knowledge, students can go further to study set design and construction, costuming and making up characters for a play, and lighting and sound.
Patty Granville Awards
The Patty Granville Awards began in the 2002-2003 school year. The original concept began with Terry Tuck from South Garland HS based on the Betty Buckley Musical awards in Fort Worth. The idea was to develop awards that would recognize the 21 + other shows that are produced in Garland ISD High Schools that are not UIL one act plays. The shows would be judged by student judges from each high school. The Garland ISDTheatre Directors have spent the last 5 years fine tuning the awards. The result is that actors, crews and shows receive up to 44 awards at a Tony style ceremony the end of each season with performances by each of the High School Theatre Departments. The awards were named for Miss Patty Granville who has been the director of the Granville Performing Arts Center in Garland since 1982. Miss Granville has been a major supporter of High School Theatre in Garland.
