Professional Growth Opportunities
New Teachers
The transition from being a student to becoming a teacher is both scary and exhilarating. In GISD, principals assign a veteran teacher on the campus to “mentor” the first-time teachers to help them master the fine art of classroom management and teaching. There are also additional mentor resources available at the district level.
Ongoing Staff Development
During the school year there are regular staff development activities scheduled for both rookie and seasoned staff members. Each summer the Department of School Improvement and Curriculum Development sponsors a week of optional opportunities for each teacher to learn more about their own subject areas, whet their appetites for new subject certifications, hone professional skills, and explore new classroom strategies. In addition, teachers interested in pursuing ESL certification, may receive tuition reimbursements from GISD.
Leadership Opportunities
Opportunities are provided for promotion within the district. The district actively encourages campus internships for teachers working on advanced degrees that require an internship as part of their coursework and for teachers who have been identified as leaders by their supervisors. Leadership training and networking activities are provided for new administrators as well.
