Prekindergarten Program
If you have a child who will be four years old on or before September 1st, the child may be eligible to enroll in Prekindergarten classes. The Pre-K classes are offered at selected campuses for eligible youngsters. Students observe the same school calendar as other GISD students. All Pre-K classes are half-day.
Eligibility:
- The child must be four years old before September 1st
- The child must be Limited English Proficient (i.e. has limited ability in speaking or understanding English)
OR
- The family's income must qualify for free or reduced lunch according to federal income eligibility guidelines. (Applications for free/reduced lunch are available each year after August 1 through the GISD Food Service Offices or at the child's school on the first day of school. )
OR
- The child is homeless.
OR
- The child's parent is an active duty military member or the parent was killed or injured while on active duty.
OR
- The child is or has ever been in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services.
Pre-registration is encouraged; however, the school’s acceptance of a choice of school form or a Pre-K verification of income DOES NOT
GUARANTEE A PLACE FOR ANY CHILD.
Class Times
- Morning session 8:00 – 10:55 a.m.
- Afternoon session 12:15 – 3:10 p.m.
Each child will attend only one session daily.
Transportation
Parents must furnish transportation to and from school.
Cost
Minimal personal school supplies (paper, pencil, crayons, etc.) See the complete Prekindergarten School Supply List.
Registration
Beginning in January, parents may contact the school of your choice or the Department of Student Services (972-494-8255) for registration information.

For Pre-K students whose home language is other than English, enrollment is available at Student Services. For more information, call 972-494-8585.
During the summer months when school campuses are closed, enrollment is conducted at the Student Services Center.
To Enroll a Child, the Parent/Guardian should bring:
- the child’s birth certificate
- proof of residence
- the child’s social security number (if available)
- the child’s immunization records (immunization records are not required for pre-registration; however, a child may not begin school without current immunization records.)
Beginning Date
The first day of school as set by the GISD school calendar.
