2010-2011 Choice of School Period

Each year the Garland ISD conducts an annual thirty-day “Choice of School” period during which parents may choose the school they would like their child(ren) to attend for the next school year.

Choice of School Period

The Open-Enrollment 30-day Choice Period will occur in the spring semester. This year, elementary and secondary will have two separate open enrollment periods, which are as follows:

  • Secondary Choice Period (Grades 5-11)
    January 21 – February 19
  • Elementary Choice Period (Grades PreK-4)
    March 2 – March 31

Forms

Forms will be sent home with students the day before the 30-day choice period begins. Forms can also be obtained from:

  • Your neighborhood Garland ISD school
  • Garland ISD Student Services Center
720 Stadium Drive; Garland, TX 75040
(SE corner of Glenbrook and Stadium Drives-near William Stadium)
  • Harris Hill Administration Building Reception Desk
    501 S. Jupiter Road; Garland, TX 75042
(SW corner of Jupiter and Walnut – across Jupiter from the Forest/Jupiter DART station)

New 2010 - 2011 Enrollment for Students new to GISD

Students who are new to Garland ISD should review enrollment procedures.

This includes:

  • Students not currently enrolled in GISD
  • Students moving into the district mid-year
  • Students moving into the district prior to the first day of school in August.

General Enrollment Information

If you are new to the district and need to determine what location is closest to your home, a map of the district is available on the website.

Choice of School

On each form, parents may indicate a first, second, and third choice. It is highly recommended that parents indicate second and third choices. If for some reason the district must deny the first choice and alternate choices have not been indicated, the district will be compelled to select a school for the student. Turning the form in early does not increase the chances of getting into the first, second or third school of choice.

When you are making your choice remember:

  • The Family Preference Option & the Magnet School Application Period.
  • Changes to the choice of school form can be made at any time prior to the 30-day Choice Period.
  • For record-keeping purposes, you will be asked to complete a new form if you elect to make a change.
  • After the 30-day choice window closes, the choices are binding, except under limited circumstances.
  • If a student does not get their first choice school during the “Choice of School” process, the parent may contact the school of preference to request placement on a waiting list. Quite often, due to families moving out of the area during the summer or a child being accepted to a specialized program, openings will become available at schools.

If a parent does not turn in a Choice of School form, the district will make a choice for you. Choice forms should be signed by the parent unless the student is 18 years or older.
