Translation and Interpretation Services
Translation and Interpretation Services (TIS) understands the importance of promoting effective communication between our schools and departments and the global community that we serve in Garland, Rowlett and Sachse. By providing professional interpretation and translation services, the Translation and Interpretation Division of Student Services will ensure that our schools and departments are able to effectively communicate with our patrons, parents and students in any language at any time. This service enhances communication with our families.
What is translation?
Translation refers to written language. It is the transmittal of written text from one language into another. Upon written requests, Translation & Interpretation Services translates district-wide school documents, handbooks, parent-notification letters, informational booklets, brochures, and other school-related written materials as needed from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
Can I request a document to be translated?
No. The Translation & Interpretation Division of Student Services is solely responsible for translating documents requested for use by GISD schools and departments only.
What is interpretation?
Interpretation refers to spoken words. It is the oral transmittal of a message from one language into another. Interpreters are extremely important in helping to serve families who are more comfortable communicating in their native language. All persons who cannot communicate effectively with the school because their primary language is other than English will be afforded an interpreter.
Can I request an interpreter?
Yes. Also upon written request, Translation & Interpretation Services coordinates simultaneous and/or consecutive interpretation services for the expressed purpose of providing oral communication at district-wide school meetings, public school board meetings, ARD meetings, parent conferences, phone calls, and other school-related functions. Through individual vendor contracts or Language Line Services for over-the-phone interpretations, TIS can access interpreters in over 165 different languages and dialects. All interpreters are native speakers who are familiar with the target language/dialect and culture being spoken.
How do I request an interpreter?
If you wish to make a request for an interpreter, you may contact your child’s school office to express the need for interpretation. You may also contact Maria Floyd, Facilitator for Translation & Interpretation Services, at mafloyd@garlandisd.net or by phone at (972)-485-4910.
