Transportation Facts

Did you know ...

  • It is state law that a school bus stops within 15 to 50 feet before crossing a railroad crossing whether loaded or unloaded.
  • It is GISD policy that school buses can not make a right turn at a red light.
  • All motor vehicles must stop when approaching a bus with red lights flashing that is loading or unloading unless the bus in on the opposite side of a physically divided roadway. Failure to stop could make you subject to fines of $200-$1,000. Subsequent offenses can result in loss of driver’s license.
  • All students riding a bus must have a Bus Information Card on file at the transportation office.
  • GISD buses do not make house stops except for special education students and some rural addresses.
  • A student’s eligibility is determined by their home address which must be the address on their student record.
  • If a student is to ride the bus to or from school on a given day with a friend, he/she must have a note signed by the parent and approved by the principal or their designee and that both students must be bus riders from an eligible transportation area with space available on the bus.
  • GISD has over 260 Bus Drivers including route drivers, sub drivers and field trip drivers.
  • GISD transports approximately 16,000 students daily with about 800 of these special needs students.
  • GISD bus drivers transport students to approximately 7,439 extra-curricular activities.
  • The speed limit in a school zone is 20 mph and in a school parking lot it is 10 mph. Always stay alert when in the vicinity of a school.
  • School bus transportation is the safest form of transportation available.
