Shugart Memorial Donations Top $600 for Bullock ES Library

Article Date: April 11, 2008

More than $600 has been raised for the library at Bullock Elementary School in memory of Shirley Shugart – a longtime Garland ISD benefactor who passed away in February.

The money, which Shugart requested go toward Bullock after her death in lieu of flowers, has enabled school officials to purchase 60 new titles for the library. Each title will bear a face plate to honor her in a lasting literary legacy.

“Upon her retirement from banking, Shirley Shugart began her ‘second career’ by substituting – almost full-time – in GISD,” said Barry Horn, assistant principal at Bullock ES. “Most of her time in the classroom was spent here at Bullock. It became her second home.”

Horn said that Bullock was able to purchase the 60 volumes after book vendors offered discounted pricing when hearing Shugart’s story and learning of the memorial endeavor.

Shugart and her family are well associated with the city of Garland and GISD. Her two daughters – Lisa Dunavant and Lori Shugart – are school district employees and Shugart Elementary School was named after their family. Shugart’s sister-in-law, Jill Shugart, is a former superintendent of GISD and namesake of the Jill Shugart Professional Development Center.
