Daisy Munguia, a bilingual kindergarten student at Back ES, won the Garland Independent School Districts’s annual March of Dimes T-shirt design contest last month. Mungia’s design, entitled “March of Dimes Helps Babies Shake It!” was chosen from almost 700 submissions and most campuses.

“The stack of entries seems to get larger every year,” said Judy Kriehn, a communications coordinator with the district. Kriehn is responsible for converting the hand-drawn images to digital renderings which can be placed on T-shirts. “You can tell the contest has been embraced on the campus level because there are a lot of drawings to sort through and a lot of them are very creative. It gets more and more difficult.”
Munguia is the first winner from Back ES. Her submission was selected by two judging panels and is featured on this year’s official GISD March of Dimes T-shirt.
Garland ISD is traditionally one of the state’s strongest supporters of the non-profit foundation that works to improve the health of babies through several prevention methods.
