Pinckley, whose card featured a “Polar Express” train loaded with a coal bin full of gifts, was chosen by a judging committee assembled by the contest’s sponsor – the GISD Council of PTAs. In her design, Pinckley even included directional signs which lead the conductor to GISD’s tri-cities of Garland, Rowlett and Sachse.
Ashleigh Edney of Kimberlin Academy claimed second place for her design of a snowman in the forest, surrounded by a border of peppermints, angels and wrapped gifts, all positioned underneath the phrase, “Season’s Greetings.”
Pinckley’s winning artwork will be highlighted as this year’s GISD holiday card used by the Board of Trustees and Superintendent Curtis Culwell.
For her efforts, Sarah received 50 copies of the card to share with family and friends, and was recognized with the School Board’s Evidence of Excellence award at the Dec. 6 board meeting.
Each year, the card contest is open to every fifth-grade student in the GISD. It begins within art classes at the campus level where one winner is selected from each school. Submissions are then evaluated at the district level by judges who base criteria on evidence of creativity, expression of theme and reproduction quality. Thirty campuses participated in 2007.
