The thundering boom of horsepower rumbled for miles last Friday as almost 60 leather-clad motorcyclists braved the elements and roared across northeastern Dallas County in the second annual Garland Independent School District Ride for Kids Toy Run.

The ride, which began at GISD’s Special Events Center, raised enough money to buy an age-appropriate book for all 506 students attending Bullock Elementary School. Riders also cruised into Bullock’s parking lot with toys strapped to their bikes while International Trucks and Sport City Toyota served as corporate sponsors.
According to Larry Williams, co-coordinator of the toy run, 40 bikes braved the cold, wet weather and participated in this year’s event. Several bikes arrived with passengers so organizers were satisfied with total numbers.
“We had a nice group show up despite the colder temperatures and rain,” Williams said. “We’re pleased that these riders were able to deliver books and toys to a group of kids that will really benefit from their generosity. The school and its students were extremely grateful. You could see the joy on their faces. That alone made the trip worth it.”
Riders gathered on the arena floor at the SEC earlier that morning and lined up their motorcycles for the run. After departing, the group traveled through much of the Garland ISD, weaving its way through downtown’s square, eventually coming to rest at Bullock ES.
The procession was led by a Garland Police Department motorcycle brigade and a City of Garland Fire Department hose truck. Two riders clad in Santa Claus outfits and a winding line of Harley Davidsons, Hondas and Kawasakis closely followed.
Once inside, members of the Silver Rhythm Dancers – Rowlett High School’s drill team – performed for Bullock students, in addition to helping the two Santas distribute gifts.
