The Garland Independent School District did its part to ensure that thousands of local families will have food on their tables this holiday season, contributing 153,801 food items to the 2007 Garland Christmas Association Canned Food Drive.

Each year, GISD stages a friendly competition between its campuses in an effort to see which group brings the most food items. The contest divides schools into grade levels – elementary, middle and high school – resulting in one winner from each group.

Students and their assistant principal pass boxes down the hall to the National Guard transport truck.

The winning campuses are chosen based on the number of items brought in per student enrolled. This year’s winners:

Sachse High School
22,636 items, 9.2 per student
Memorial Middle School
11,002 items, 54.2 per student
Hickman Elementary School
12,663 items, 18.1 per student

Each campus will receive a commemorative plaque at the Jan. 17 School Board Meeting.

Members of the Garland-area Texas Air National Guard and the GISD Maintenance Department traveled throughout the district and gathered the donated goods for delivery to the Salvation Army.
