Teachers Driving Success – a program that recognizes outstanding North Texas teachers by awarding a car a week to the deserving educators – drove a 2007 Saturn Ion to Shugart’s campus. The group, which is sponsored by CBS 11, TXA 21 and Drivers Select, presented her the keys as teachers, students and family looked on.
The contest calls for parents and students to nominate a teacher they feel has made a significant, positive impact on their lives or the lives of others. Submitted in essay form, the weekly nominations are judged by area education experts and eventually narrowed to three finalists. A new group then views the articles and chooses a winner.
Shugart was nominated by the parent of a special needs child in her classroom. With five weeks remaining in the contest, she became seventh winning teacher. Jennifer Wilhite of Naaman Forest High School was named a finalist this week.
