Tuesday afternoon, Schrade Middle School teacher Ralph Emig became the district’s second teacher to be awarded a new car for impacting a student’s life in the classroom.
Teachers Driving Success – a program that recognizes outstanding North Texas teachers by awarding a car a week to the deserving educators – drove a 2006 Chevy Cobalt to Emig’s campus. The group, which is sponsored by CBS 11, TXA 21 and Drivers Select, presented him the keys as teachers, students and family looked on.
“I am just in awe,” said the seventh grade math instructor. “This is really amazing and could not have come at a better time…I’ve been without a vehicle for three months now.”
The contest calls for students and parents to nominate a teacher they feel has made a significant, positive impact on their lives or the lives of others. Submitted in essay form, the weekly nominations are judged by area education experts and eventually narrowed to three finalists. A new group then views the articles and chooses a winner.
Emig was nominated by former student Zach Rozinski, who visited with reporters about the instruction he received in Emig’s classroom.
“He teaches things that you can use while you’re in his class but you can also take everything you learn on to high school,” said the Rowlett ninth grader. “I really believe that I was taught by the best teacher, ever.”
Emig became the ninth teacher to win a car through the program.
