Northlake ES Library to Undergo Dramatic 'READesign' From Volunteers

Article Date: November 28, 2007

The library at Northlake Elementary School will undergo a well-deserved remodel Saturday, Dec. 1, as volunteers from two national groups join the local community in the school’s reading center.

Together with The Heart of America Foundation, Capital One will host this weekend’s “literacy celebration” – beginning at 9:30 a.m. – to provide the Garland ISD campus with an A-to-Z library makeover. Families will join local celebrities, volunteers and community leaders to celebrate the new library. The group will receive lunch and each child will take home four-to-five new books.

Capital One will also donate 1,000 new books to the library and each Northlake student will receive two new books on their desk Monday morning.

Organizers estimate that, from start to finish, program participants will have devoted 500 hours in this school library “READesign” – redecorating, refurbishing and replenishing book shelves to transform the library into a vibrant, kid-friendly environment.

Heart of America, which organizes READesign events across the country, selected Northlake ES as winner of its Dallas-area contest. In October, HOA representatives conducted site-based visits to Metroplex schools making it to the final round. Nationwide, only five schools will receive READesign makeovers during the 2007-08 school year.

Each year, Capital One partners with HOA to host these literacy celebrations. Capital One has donated more than 700,000 books to at-risk children, and associates have volunteered more than 6,000 hours reading and mentoring students throughout the past five years.
