Board Notes: October 18, 2007
It was standing-room-only at Garland ISD’s Harris Hill Administration Building Thursday night as the Board of Trustees acknowledged more than 50 GISD scholars recognized as National Merit Students.
Each fall the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and the College Board recognize twelfth grade students who performed well on the previous year’s Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. Each GISD high school was represented by a student in one of six categories.
Walnut Glen Elementary School was presented the Evidence of Excellence award for their recent recognition as a 2007 Blue Ribbon School.
Principal Sylvia McCloskey was on hand, along with assistant principal Alex Rivera, to accept the certificate. One of only 287 schools in the country to receive the U.S. Department of Education’s highest honor, Walnut Glen is the second GISD school recognized in as many years. McCloskey will attend the national ceremony in Washington, D.C. next month.
