Garland ISD Trustees ushered in a new era this week as they awarded two Evidence of Excellence awards at Thursday evening's board meeting. The award, designed to highlight district students and employees who exceed expectations, will be given each month at the first Thursday-evening board meeting.
The first honoree, Coyle Middle School band, claimed the Commended Band Award at this year's National Wind Band Competition and will be featured at the 2008 National Concert band Festival in Indianapolis, Ind. Band director Marcia Zoffuto and assistant Sheng Thao accepted the award.
Jonathan Corpuz, a student at North Garland High School, was the other recipient. Corpuz won first prize in Medical Laboratory Assisting at the Health Occupations Students of America national competition this summer in Orlando, Fla.
