The musicians were honored for their performance at last month’s Western International Band Conference in Seattle, Wash. Only eight groups from across the country were selected to perform.

Board members also heard a report on the district’s athletic heart screening project.

Through Senate Bill 7, GISD entered a pilot study with Children’s Medical Center of Dallas to conduct electrocardiograms on high school athletes. State lawmakers introduced the pilot to investigate the possibility of statewide screening for students.

Garland is the first district in North Texas to complete the process. More than 225 students participated. Screenings are also being conducted in the Houston and Austin areas.
