John-Charles Terry, a fifth grader at Routh Roach Elementary School, was named winner of Garland ISD’s annual Holiday Greeting Card contest. His design featured a Stetson sitting atop a cactus, surrounded by three gifts. Each was labeled for Garland, Rowlett and Sachse – the tri-city community served by GISD.

A judging committee assembled by the contest’s sponsor – the GISD Council of PTAs – selected Terry’s design from 34 schools district-wide. The winning artwork will be highlighted as this year’s GISD holiday card used by the Board of Trustees and Superintendent Dr. Curtis Culwell.
Terry will receive 50 copies of the card to share with family and friends.
Second place went to Aakaash Duggal of Club Hill ES for a detailed drawing of a Christmas tree. Michelle Ruiz of Golden Meadows claimed third place. Her design was a snowman village that featured ice skating, sledding and trains.

Each year, the card contest is open to all fifth-grade students in the GISD. It begins within art classes at the campus level where one winner is selected from each school. Submissions are then evaluated at the district level by judges who base criteria on evidence of creativity, expression of theme and reproduction quality.
