City Awards $8,000 to GISD Students Through Environmental Essay Contest

Article Date: February 1, 2008

Green education paid out some green rewards for 10 Garland ISD elementary teachers and students last month as the City of Garland’s Stormwater Management division awarded them $8,000 through an environmental education program.

“Be Stormwater Smart,” the department’s second-annual essay contest, invited first through fifth grade GISD students to submit articles on water quality issues and the importance of conservation. The two-month contest awarded $500 to a winning student and teacher from each grade while second-place finishers both received $300.

According to Stormwater officials, participation increased on all levels this year. Student entries increased to 720 from 446 last year. Campus and teacher involvement also rose to 48 teachers and 14 schools, up from 40 and 14 in 2006.

For more information, or to report stormwater pollution, call the city’s hotline at (972) 205-2180 or visit www.garlandstormwater.org.
