Garland ISD to Host More Than 40 Schools at College Fair
Article Date: February 5, 2008
Representatives from more than 40 colleges and the military will be on hand to visit with students as Garland ISD hosts its annual College and Financial Aid Fair 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Special Events Center. The participants will answer admission questions and other topics for GISD juniors, seniors and their parents.
The SEC arena will be open to college browsing from 6-7:30 p.m., while workshops will be conducted throughout. In the conference center, sessions will include College Financial Aid and the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), “Making it Count” sessions, Immigration Lawyer (IRS and FAFSA), and College, Career and Scholarship Search Online.
Tax information from 2007 should be brought to the FAFSA workshop.
According to GISD’s Department of Guidance and Counseling, students can never be too prepared when visiting with college representatives. Students should arrive ready with a list of questions for their potential colleges, including how that school rates in particular job fields and what job-placement rates are.
“Students need to know what to ask – things like, how the school’s student body is comprised, tuition and fees, what the city is like, what is the on-campus student life like?” said Donna Bartlett, a counselor support specialist for GISD. “They can never ask too many questions and these recruiters are here to answer them.”
Counselors also realize that many students aren’t going to make official visits to colleges. They say that students can make up for not touring the campus and the city by visiting with the college recruiters and taking as much of a verbal tour as they can.
Among the colleges attending are, Angelo State University, Baylor University, Dallas Tele College, El Centro Community College, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, Jackson State University, Kansas State University, Lincoln Technical Institute, Louisiana State University, Midwestern State University, Prairie View A&M University, Rice University, Richland Community College, Stephen F. Austin State University, Southern Methodist University, Tarleton State University, Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University, Texas Wesleyan University, Texas Woman’s University, Tyler Junior College, University of Houston, University of North Texas, University of North Texas-Dallas, University of Texas-Austin, University of Texas-Tyler and the U.S. Navy.
