Collegiate Signings Spill Over From GISD High Schools

Hours of practice and preparation paid off for Garland ISD high school athletes from six different sports this morning as they inked letters of intent to continue their athletic pursuits at collegiate institutions across the country.

Student athletes from the talent-rich school district signed on for two- and four-year commitments in the nation’s finest conferences and leagues, including the Big 12, SEC, C-USA, Ivy, MIAA and Southland. Among the schools represented are Alabama, Baylor, Kansas, Louisiana State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Rice, Texas and Texas A&M.
Terry Asante, who will travel north to Kansas and suit up for the Emporia State Hornets, was among seven South Garland Colonels earning scholarships. Asante caught the eye of Emporia assistant coach Travis Fox during the Colonels’ 10-2 district championship season.
“Terry is an explosive back with great strength and vision,” Fox said. “He is not only effective carrying the ball, but he is a good blocker as well. And he fits in with what we do because he can line up in five wide and catch the ball. We’re very excited about having him at Emporia State.”
