Congressman Sam Johnson, Valentines for Vets scheduled at Dorsey ES

To celebrate 35 years of freedom, U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson (District 3, Texas) will pick up handmade “Valentines for Vets” created by the students of Dorsey Elementary School in Rowlett at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11. Later that afternoon, Johnson will deliver the valentine greetings to hospitalized veterans at the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center as part of the day’s national program.

The elected representative from District 3 in Texas will address the Garland ISD students through his “Operation Homecoming Anniversary” talk and describe what Feb. 12 means to him.A 29-year Air Force veteran, Johnson spent almost seven years as a Prisoner of War in Vietnam – more than half of that time was in solitary confinement.

On Feb. 12, 1973, the longest held Prisoners of War – as well as those needing urgent medical attention – were released to U.S. officials near Hanoi, North Vietnam under the terms of the cease-fire agreement. Johnson was among those released, having been captured during his second tour in Vietnam.

He touched down on Texas soil and reunited with his family five days later, Feb. 17.

Each February, Americans open their hearts to the country’s hospitalized veterans by sending cards and letters to them in medical centers across the country through the “Valentines for Vets” program.America observes the national salute to hospitalized veterans the week of Valentine's Day.
