Four GISD Students Among Johnson’s Service Academy Nominations

Article Date: February 26, 2008

This month U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson announced the names of those students he nominated to become the Class of 2012 in the U.S. Service Academies. Among them were four seniors from the Garland ISD.

"Tne of the most positive and rewarding things that I do in Congress is nominating the future leaders of our armed forces,” said Johnson, the representative from District 3 in Texas.

Three Sachse High School students were identified. Drew Hunnicutt was nominated for the United States Military Academy while Richard Kleinhans and Anja Vukic were both recommended for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Kleinhans also received nomination for the U.S. Naval Academy.

South Garland High School senior Marshall Atwood was the fourth nominee, also receiving Johnson’s support for entrance into the U.S. Naval Academy.

Each academy will now narrow the field of applicants by granting appointments to the most qualified nominees and make formal offers of appointment in the spring.

Encompassing parts of both Dallas and Collin counties, Johnson’s office receives a significant number of annual applications. The Congressman appoints an independent selection board comprised of Air Force, Naval, Merchant Marine and Military Academy graduates to select 10 candidates for each vacancy.

Third District residents ages 17-22 were qualified to apply after meeting eligibility requirements in leadership, physical aptitude, scholarship and character. Candidates were selected based on academic performance, class rank, SAT and ACT scores, and GPA. Extracurricular and civic activities were also factors.
