Garland ISD Fourth Graders Travel to Austin For Proud to be Texan Program

Garland ISD fourth graders got a close look at Texas pride as groups from Beaver Technology Center and Shugart Elementary School traveled to Austin with Education in Action’s “Proud to be Texan” experiential learning day program.
Students and their teachers visited the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and the Texas State Capitol for a first-hand account of the images and stories learned in fourth grade Texas History classes.
“Education in Action’s programs are based on the understanding that the most effective way for students to learn is through experience,” said Jennifer Pasteur, Education in Action’s executive director. “Student activities during these Proud to be Texan programs reinforce and supplement fourth grade Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills learning objectives with a focus on why Texans are so proud of their unique heritage.”
In Austin, students toured the Senate and House of Representatives chambers in the State Capitol and met with Sen. John Carona (District 116) and Rep. Fred Hill (District 112).

t the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, groups studied exhibits about early Texas inhabitants, the Texas Revolution and other events that created the Lone Star identity. They also visited the multi-sensory Texas Spirit Theater and its feature presentation, “The Star of Destiny.”
Education in Action also entertained another group of Shugart students on a trip to Waco’s Cameron Park Zoo, the Mayborn Museum at Baylor University, and Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown. That trip was part of their “Water Rocks” program, geared toward interactive fifth-grade science learning.
