Additionally, Jim Nelson, the AVID CEO and former Superintendent of Richardson ISD and former Texas Commissioner of Education, was an observer at Sellers that day as they went through the all day process.
We are very proud of the students and staff since this is the highest honor that an AVID school can receive, and they are the first school in Garland ISD to receive this distinguished award. Presently, there are 500 AVID schools from grades 5-12 in Texas, but only 17 have received this recognition which places Sellers in the top 3% as far as quality of the program.

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, began in California in 1980. Since then, AVID is now in 46 states, Canada and Europe. The program is designed to help students who have the potential to go to college but have obstacles and lack academic skills to make it happen. The students are taught skills to help them to be successful, responsible and accountable to make the necessary preparations for the rigorous course work that is ahead of them. The ultimate goal of AVID is to make the entire school a college ready campus.
Sellers is one of several GISD schools that participate in the AVID Program.
