Held inside Mike A. Myers stadium on The University of Texas at Austin campus, the state platform provided Rowlett an opportunity to showcase two solid relay teams, shored up by two individuals whose Herculean efforts cinched the Eagles a crown.
Juniors Marquise Goodwin and Kyle Clemons both earned gold medals in their individual events while teaming up with classmates Jared Jackson and Nick Smith to claim first and third place in the 400-and 800-meter relays, respectively.
Goodwin also posted individual gold in the long jump (26-1½) and triple jump (50-0½), and finished second in the 100-meter dash with a 10.38 showing. His long jump performance was the first 26-foot leap in Austin since 1994.
After finishing second at last month’s regional competition in the 400-meter dash, Clemons stepped up his efforts and stormed his way to a gold medal with a 47.08 run.
Rowlett finished with 70 points on the evening, four better than second-place Lewisville. Garland High finished in 11th place with 16 points. Rowlett team results and Class 5A state team results are below.
