Families Flock to Weaver ES For Annual All-School Picnic

Article Date: November 4, 2008

Baskets, blankets and sack lunches decorated the lawn behind Weaver Elementary School last week as families gathered for the building’s annual All-School Picnic.

Pizza was a popular hit among families at Weaver Elementary's annuall All-School Picnic.

Weaver – which is among the Garland Independent School District’s original elementary schools – hosts the lunchtime event for families each year. And according to Mary Garcia, principal at Weaver, the community event is always well attended.

“Students always love the chance to show their mom and dad where they go to school,” Garcia said. “A lot of families even bring their grandparents. This is a simple way to get our families out to the school, meet the teachers, and become more involved in their child’s education.”

As families arrive for the picnic, they check in at the front office and are escorted to the playground where their anxious children await. The festivities last about one hour – the length of a traditional lunch period.

“The picnic generates a lot of optimism and was very successful long before I came to Weaver,” said Garcia, who is in her second year at the campus. “Our kids and teachers really look forward to it, as do our parents, so we plan on this making the Weaver calendar for many years to come.”
