Transition Learning Center Now DART Approved For Reduced Fare Certification

Article Date: November 13, 2008

Last month, job coaches throughout the district attended a travel training in-service presentation by DART. Through Laurie Thompson, a certified orientation and mobility specialist for GISD, the district obtained information on DART’s Paratransit eligibility, certification, regular DART reduced fare information and travel training for both.

Passengers load the DART Rail at Akard Station.

After the information session, GISD’s Transition Learning Center (TLC) was selected as a DART-approved certifying agency. With this certification, the TLC can now submit electronic applications for reduced fares.

To obtain a DART Reduced Fare I.D. for disabled individuals, applicants can bring proof of their disability to the TLC where the application will be completed and submitted online. Once paperwork has been turned in, applicants can take a valid photo I.D. to DART’s headquarters, 1401 Pacific in downtown Dallas.

There, a DART agent will take a picture and create a new I.D. for a $2 fee. The I.D. is good for one year and allows the recipient to ride DART buses and trains for reduced rates.

Students currently ride at the reduced rate with a school identification. DART approval would allow graduating students with disabilities to continue riding at the reduced rate.
