Football Wrap-Up: Week Eight

Article Date: October 20, 2008

The Garland Owls took a huge step toward solidifying their playoff positioning Friday night as they dashed the homecoming dreams of Rowlett, 17-10, at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.

Owl quarterback Adrian Phillips rushed for 199 yards on 35 carries in his first start of the season after Jared Barnett broke his collarbone last week. The injury prompted Garland coaches to move the athletic Phillips under center from his receiver position.

The Garland defense limited Eagle running back Dexter Imade to less than 50 yards on the night, only one week after he gouged Naaman Forest for 202 yards on the ground.

Garland (8-0, 4-0) remains in sole possession of first place in District 10-5A and placed itself one game up on Rowlett (4-3, 2-1). Student enrollment at the schools is the highest in District 10-5A, placing both in the higher playoff classification. With only three weeks left until playoffs, Garland now holds a significant advantage over Rowlett.
