Garland ISD Earns Recognized Status From TEA
Article Date: August 4, 2009
The Garland ISD was officially named a Recognized district last week when the Texas Education Agency released its official rankings for the 2008-09 school year.
This marks the fourth time in 10 years that GISD has been named Recognized. The district last attained this lofty status when it accomplished back-to-back Recognized ratings during the 2001 and 2002 school years.
Through a series of base indicators – which includes the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test – the TEA evaluates school districts and their individual campuses throughout the state. Each campus and district then receive a rating based on their performance.
The four rating categories are Academically Unacceptable, Academically Acceptable, Recognized and Exemplary.
To achieve a Recognized rating districts must meet a performance standard of 75-percent or higher on TAKS tests for each subject and student group, an 85-percent completion rate, and an annual dropout rate of two percent or less.
Individually, GISD had 33 campuses earn Exemplary status, an increase of eight campuses from last year. Twenty-two campuses were named Recognized and 11 were Academically Acceptable.
Five of the district’s seven high schools were Recognized and 46 elementary campuses were either Exemplary or Recognized.
GISD was classified as Academically Acceptable in 2008.
