GISD Campuses Top 2-million Cans For Annual Food Drive
Article Date: January 8, 2008
For well over 20 years, the Garland ISD has participated in the Garland Christmas Association’s annual canned food drive. This year, GISD topped the 2-million can mark when campuses combined to donate 96,900 items for needy families.
To promote participation, the district stages a friendly competition between its campuses in an effort to see which group brings the most food items. The contest divides schools into grade levels – elementary, middle and high school – resulting in one winner from each group.
The winning campuses are chosen based on the number of items donated per student enrolled. This year’s winners:
Sachse High School
6.95 per student
Memorial Middle School
10.65 per student
Montclair Elementary School
11.81 per student
Each winning campus will receive a commemorative plaque at the Jan. 15 School Board Meeting. Hickman ES, Armstrong ES, Schrade MS, Webb MS, Rowlett HS and North Garland HS finished second and third in their respective divisions.
Members of the Garland-area Texas Air National Guard and the GISD Maintenance Department traveled throughout the district and gathered the donated goods for delivery to the Salvation Army.
