Article Date: June 11, 2009
Garland ISD's Tamecia Drain was apprehensive last Friday when the classroom instructor was called to the office by Superintendent Curtis Culwell. Her concern quickly turned to delight, however, when Culwell surprised Drain with the news that she had been named the 2009 GISD Teacher of the Year.

"My principal told me I was coming over here for a reading meeting with teachers and that the superintendent wanted to visit with me,” Drain said. “I wasn’t sure what to think but it doesn’t matter now. I can’t believe this.”
Drain has taught at Giddens-Steadham Elementary for the past five years. She currently teaches third grade and has received several honors in recent years, including a Target Reading Grant. She is also the reigning Teacher of the Year at Steadham ES.
Drain credits her students, parents, family, co-workers and colleagues for providing her support and inspiration to continuously stay motivated beyond the school day. She will go on to represent GISD in the Region 10 Teacher of Year competition.
