The quality of Garland ISD students, employees and Trustees was on display at Thursday night’s board meeting as all three groups were recognized and rewarded for jobs well done.

Students who received a superior “4” rating at the 2009 State Visual Arts Scholastic Event were awarded the school board’s Evidence of Excellence award for being selected from more than 1,000 students and 13,000 entries across Texas.
Frances Farmer, the current social studies coordinator for GISD, received the Dr. Robert B. Sewell award for her life of dedicated service to the students and staff of the district. Each year, one employee is chosen for demonstrating the kind of love, dedication and professionalism shown by the late Dr. Sewell.
Juanita McElroy, second grade bilingual teacher at Keeley Elementary School, was also honored as the 2009 Jan Burleson Memorial Scholarship winner. The $500 amount will be applied toward pursuit of a bachelor's degree.
School Board members Keith Montgomery and Tommy Reed were sworn in for Places 6 and 7, respectively. The two ran unopposed in the April election. Officers were also selected for the upcoming calendar year:
