Article Date: September 17, 2009
Garland ISD's first Evidence of Excellence awards for the 2009-10 school year were handed out Thursday night at the school board meeting in the Harris Hill Administration Building.
Kilian Cooley, the 2009 Garland HS salutatorian, was recognized for winning the 2009 UIL Spelling and Vocabulary Individual State Championship. The current Purdue University freshman visited with Trustees and his family via telephone. Board President Robert Harris thanked Cooley for his hard work and read the Evidence Award aloud over the speakerphone.
Eight GISD campuses were also recognized after being named to the 2009 Texas Business and Education Coalition Honor Roll. Austin Academy, Beaver Technology Center, Kimberlin Academy, Hillside Academy, Roach Elementary, Classical Center at Vial, Walnut Glen Academy and Watson Technology Center were in a select group of fewer than four percent of all Texas public schools named to the TBEC roll.
Board members also voted to move the Oct. 1 work session to Oct. 8, allowing Trustees and school administrators to attend the annual TASA/TASB conference in Austin. The Oct. 15 regular meeting will take place as scheduled.
