Accountability ratings and reports

Accountability ratings

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) provides annual academic accountability ratings for our district and schools. The ratings are based mostly on how well our students do on state standardized tests like STAAR and graduation rates.

The district and all of our schools receive one of four ratings under the accountability system:

  • Met Standard
  • Met Standard-Paired
  • Met Alternative Standard
  • Improvement Required

In addition to the ratings, campuses that have a rating of Met Standard are eligible for Distinction Designations.

A video available from the TEA in English and Spanish provides a quick overview of the system.

How are accountability ratings determined?

The 2017 Accountability rating labels are based on scores for the four performance indices that comprise the accountability system.

Performance Index

There are four parts to the performance index:

  • Index 1: Student Achievement
  • Index 2: Student Progress
  • Index 3: Closing Performance Gaps
  • Index 4: Postsecondary Readiness

Schools and districts must met the target either for Indices 1, 3 and 4 or for Indices 2, 3 and 4 to earn a Met Standard rating.

Schools and districts that missed the target in two or more Indices earned an Improvement Required rating.

What do the indices measure?

Index 1 looks at how well students did on the STAAR test.  Index 2 measures year-to-year student progress by subject and student group.  Index 3 makes sure that economically disadvantaged students and students of every race/ethnicity are performing well. Index 4 measures whether students are prepared for success in college, the workforce, job training programs or the military. For high schools and districts, Index 4 also looks at graduation rates and plans.

Distinction designations

Schools that earned a Met Standard rating are eligible for distinction designations, which compare the performance of a single school to the performance of 40 similar schools across seven categories. A school that performs at the same level as the top ten schools in the comparison group earns a distinction designation.

Available Distinction Designations:

  • Academic Achievement in ELAR,
  • Academic Achievement in Mathematics
  • Academic Achievement in Science
  • Academic Achievement in Social Studies
  • Top 25% Student Progress
  • Top 25% in Closing Performance Gaps
  • Postsecondary Readiness
