Garland ISD kicks off its annual Fifth Grade Greeting Card Contest in November, inviting elementary schools to submit one entry each. District judges then cast their votes in December, and the top three designs are chosen for the Superintendent and Board of Trustees’ holiday stationary.
This year’s winners include:
Adileny Vasquez from Daugherty Elementary
She used a collage of scrapbook paper to create a beautiful forest scene, featuring birds a tree and a deer.
Baneen Alaydi from Sewell Elementary
Baneen painted a winter wonderland, complete with snow-topped houses, a frozen pond, glistening trees and a jolly snowman.
Esteban Zavala from Beaver Technology Center for Math and Science
His drawing depicted the inside of a house all ready for the holidays. A stocking is hung next to the roaring fire with presents next to the tree. Esteban even included a snowman peeking through the nearby window.
Cards printed with these designs have been sent from the Superintendent and Board of Trustees to contacts across the state. Each of the winners also received 50 copies of their card during a recognition at the Dec. 13 board meeting.
The artistic talents of all 35 participants in the 2016 Fifth Grade Greeting Card Contest are now on display in the GISD Video Gallery.
