Athletics events attendance guidelines

To support social distancing while allowing spectators to attend our athletic events, the following guidelines have been established.

Basketball gym guidelines

Scrimmages

  • There will be no spectators allowed at any basketball scrimmages held in GISD.

Pre-season

  • The freshman and JV teams may alternate playing in the auxiliary gyms on game nights so parents/fans will be given the opportunity to watch the game in which their athlete is playing at least once a week.  No fans will be allowed in Auxiliary gyms.
  • The games in the main gym will be played allowing 2 spectators/fans for each student athlete. All students must be accompanied by an adult and sit with that adult during the game.
  • Teams and spectators/fans will exit the gym and leave the school immediately after their game.
  • If there are multiple games/teams playing at one site, and the auxiliary gym will be used, there will be no spectators/fans allowed to attend because the bleacher area will have to be used to socially distance the teams waiting to play.

District games

  • All fans/spectators will not be allowed entry to a GISD gym unless they answer the Building Pre-screening printed question upon gym entry.
  • Each student athlete will be allowed 2 spectators/fans to watch the game according to the student athlete’s ID and name.
  • Two fans/spectators for each individual student will be allowed to sit together with a face covering and those two must socially distance from the next group of two (bleachers will be marked to indicate acceptable distancing). Students must be accompanied by an adult and sit with that adult during the game.
  • All spectators/fans will be expected to leave the gym/school upon completion of the game in which their student athlete participates.
  • Spectators/fans will have a marked separate entry and exit for all GISD gyms.
  • There will be no one allowed on the gym floor after the completion of a game.
  • It is the coach’s responsibility to notify all visiting teams of the:
    • protocols of GISD
    • obtain a list of ID’s/names of all student athletes’ two spectators who will be in attendance.

Volleyball gym guidelines

Scrimmages

  • There will be no spectators allowed at any volleyball scrimmages held in GISD.

Pre-season

  • In venues where there are more than 2 schools playing in one session, or more than 3 matches, there can be no spectators.  The bleacher area will be used by the teams waiting to play their next match.  Teams will need to socially distance in the bleachers.
  • There will be no spectators in the auxiliary gyms if 3 matches are being played at one venue.
  • Teams may elect to rotate the teams in the auxiliary gyms, giving all teams the option of having spectators at their games. Each athlete will be allowed 2 guests in the main gym per match.

 District games

To accommodate all spectators, GISD has elected to play Varsity District games on Tuesday and Friday and Sub-Varsity games on Wednesday and Saturday.  Each athlete will be allowed 2 guests per match.

  • Gyms will be cleared of all spectators and teams after each match.
