Convocation inspires, pumps up staff for a remarkable year

More than 8,000 employees celebrated a strong start to the school year at one of the most memorable events in Garland ISD history—Convocation 2018. The Future is Bright-themed event featured luminous attire, upbeat tunes, giveaways, inspiring messages and a challenge to be the best #goaldiggers in the nation.

Spirit groups and band members from all seven high schools performed at the fun-filled event. Sachse High School teachers Joey Fagyas and Melody Sawasaki served as the affair’s dynamic emcees. Speakers included Board of Trustees President Jed Reed, Superintendent Ricardo López and keynote Manny Scott, all of whom gave words of encouragement and celebration.

“When we talk about being a “goal digger,” we talk about meeting and exceeding goals. We want our students, no matter what grade level they are in, to be at grade level or above. That’s a lot of work. That’s a high expectation. We said bring it,” stated Lopez as he addressed the crowd. “We’re DFW’s best-kept secret. What you do each and every day is going to change not only your kids’ lives, but lives of millions of kids you will never see. The recognitions that we’re going to get because of your efforts will create that [effect]. We’re taking over the world.”

Team GISD also got to enjoy special videos, including a message from Garland High School alumnus and State Commissioner of Education Mike Morath. In addition, this year’s extravaganza featured a grand finale musical montage and surprise cash prizes funded by personal donations from the Garland ISD Education Foundation Board of Directors.
