Three Garland ISD students were selected as part of an elite group of just 2,500 Merit Scholar recipients nationwide who were chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. Nicolas Dominguez from Lakeview Centennial High School, John McKelvey from Sachse High School and Khoa Pham from Garland High School were announced as the winners of $2,500 scholarships. The talented seniors received the honors after judges determined they had the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success.
The Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors. Criteria considered by the committee were: academic record, difficulty level of subjects studied, grades earned, scores from two standardized tests, contributions and leadership in school and community activities, written finalist essay, and a high school official written recommendation. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
