Student Nutrition Services (SNS) has revamped breakfast and lunch options to satisfy appetite and nourishment needs this year. Expanded menus include turkey chorizo breakfast burritos, turkey sausage pancake bites, yogurt dippers, Bagel-fuls®, spinach and cheese flatbread, peppy pizza pasta, and sweet Asian teriyaki chicken and rice.
In addition to fresh menu items, SNS is also launching its Snack Pack breakfast cart at all middle and high schools. Piloted at four last spring, the mobile food cart was able to reach students who may not have had breakfast on campus habitually.
“The cart will not replace the usual cafeteria breakfast,” said Assistant Director of Nutrition Menu Operations Jennifer Craig. “It will simply provide an additional service location with a ‘grab-n-go’ breakfast for those who do not have time to eat a cafeteria-provided breakfast daily.”
With an ever-expanding list of exciting options, it is no surprise that SNS recently received recognition from the Texas Association for School Nutrition. The department earned Breakfast and Lunch Participation Awards this summer, commemorating 10 percent or greater increases. GISD is one of just two districts to receive both awards.
"We have 600 employees out in the schools. This recognition would not be possible without each and every one," said Director Brad Trudeau while accepting an Evidence of Excellence certificate at the Aug. 23 board meeting. "Our goal is to ensure more students have the opportunity to eat meals at school."
