GISD rings in 2016-17

High-fives, hugs and smiles were buzzing across Garland ISD as 71 campuses welcomed students to the first day of school Aug. 22.

“With innovative teacher trainings and exciting staff development activities, we were more than ready to greet students and kick off a new year,” said Superintendent Bob Morrison. “For weeks, our team of approximately 7,500 has been working diligently to make sure students have a great first day.”

Parents, grandparents and siblings also helped make “First Day 2016” a memorable event, accompanying their students to classrooms, capturing moments on camera and meeting new teachers. Students at Handley Elementary School received a special surprise welcome. Handley's new principal, Tyisha Nelson, and local radio station 97.9 The Beat greeted families with cheers and music.

"We rolled out the red carpet today for our Proud Panthers," she said. "It has been an exciting morning, and it is going to be an amazing year at Handley."

New staff members were not the only introductions taking place in GISD. Nine elementaries saw new art classrooms, while Herfurth and Luna elementaries launched new Montessori magnets.

And after a busy, fun-filled first day, the GISD family is already looking forward to day two.

“Here's to a great first day of school,” states Southgate Elementary School’s Twitter page. “Our administration team is happy to serve our Southgate family and community.”
