Approved digital resources
Instead of having access to Apple's iTunes Store where commercial apps are available, Ready iPads will provide students with a GISD Self-Service portal. It will provide students access to digital resources that have been aligned with curriculum goals and classroom instruction ensuring that available apps are approved to meet instructional needs.
The iPads come pre-installed with a standard set of applications. Teachers can request additional class-specific downloads for their students and there will be an approval process before new apps are made available to students.
Chrome devices have access to an online store for apps and have pre-installed apps as well. Chrome devices follow the same approval process for new apps and extensions as the iPads.
Since the devices are intended for instruction rather than personal use, features such as messaging will also be restricted to keep use focused on instructional tasks.
GISD’s web filter is configured to allow access to a wide variety of instructional resources, including some music and entertainment sites for high school students.
Filtering will apply to the Ready devices in any GISD facility and will extend to devices when students take them home or off campus.
GISD makes every attempt to filter and block inappropriate material. However, parents need to be aware that Internet filtering alone is not enough to protect students from inappropriate content or malicious behavior. The nature of the online world is ever-changing, and both teachers and parents have to be vigilant in monitoring students’ online activities to look out for their safety and best interests.
