Staff engages in activities, training to better serve community

A new school year provides a great time to revisit goals and expectations. Thanks to the collaboration of staff, parents, Trustees and community members, Garland ISD has started 2017-18 with a streamlined Strategic Plan. This strong foundation includes added goals and reinvigorated mission, vision and values statements. Committed to better serving all, excellent customer service is GISD's primary focus.

Before the start of school, all frontline employees took a Standards of Customer Service training. Five important standards were presented and discussed in the two-hour session. Participants, which included aides, managers, secretaries and more, learned principles of interaction, listening, communication, responsiveness and impression.

Hudson Middle School took the district's commitment to an interactive level. The campus hosted a scavenger hunt titled, “How Can We Serve You?” This team-building exercise required teachers to group up, travel the city of Sachse, complete tasks with community members, and post photos on Twitter using the hashtag #HudsonStrong.

“[This activity was] in conjunction with the customer service push we did on our campus,” said Principal Carmen Blakey. “We thought it was fun and served a purpose of making the point of our business being a service business.”

Helping strangers pump gas, handing out inspirational notes, and giving city workers cold water bottles not only brightened up the day, it also actively drove the message that GISD is here to serve.
