Summer school

We offer summer school programs designed to serve the educational needs of a variety of students. Some are "traditional" summer school classes, some are special programs, and others are presented in a "day camp" format.

Please note: Not all programs are available to all students. Any questions about your child's need for summer school programming should be directed to the guidance counselor on your child's campus.

Pre-K and Kindergarten ELL Summer School program

By Invitation Only - PK and Kindergarten students currently participating in a bilingual or ESL program, as well as any participating bilingual or ESL 1st grader who are being retained in 1st grade for the 2020-2021 school year.

Dates: Monday - Thursday from June 1 - June 25

Time: 7:50 a.m.-3:30 p.m. 

Locations: Parsons, Cisneros, Beaver, Shorehaven, Watson

Elementary Summer School Program

By Invitation OnlyCurrent 5th grade GISD students who were not successful on the second administration of the STAAR Math and/or Reading test.

AVID Excel Summer Bridge

Goal is to increase ELL student language acquisition in order for students to achieve greater success in the classroom. The program serves ELL students entering 7th and 8th grade for the 2020-21 school year.

Dates: Monday - Thursday from July 6 - July 23

AVID Math Summer Bridge

The AVID Math Summer Bridge is an enrichment program open to AVID students who will be in grades 7 and 8 in the fall of 2020. It is designed for students interested in learning math concepts with increased rigor and must be recommended by their math teacher.

Dates: Monday - Thursday from June 10 - June 18

Time: 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Locations: Coyle, Lyles, Sellers

ROC: Incoming 9th Grade

Current 8th grade GISD students who will enter grade 9 in 2020-2021 and are in need of courses for advancement.

Dates: Monday - Thursday from June 3 - June 25

Time: 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Locations: NGHS, LCHS, RHS

Transportation: Provided

Food Service: Provided

Cost: $125 for the first course, $25 for the second course and no charge for extra courses.

High School EOC Intervention Program

By Invitation only - Current 9th - 11th grade GISD students in need of additional academic support to meet EOC testing requirements in core subject areas (Biology, Algebra I, English I, English II, and/or U.S. History).

Dates: Monday - Thursday from June 3 – June 25
*Testing dates: June 23, 24, 25

ROC: High School Accelerated Program (9th-12th Grade Courses)

Garland ISD students who are in danger of not graduating on time, are failing for the year, or are having difficulty meeting the 4x4 requirements for graduation will have the opportunity to participate in credit recovery.

5th Grade GISD Academy Math Summer Course

The 5th Grade Academy Math Summer Course is an enrichment program designed to accelerate math skills. This enrichment program is directly aligned to the math TEKS and includes the integration of WICOR strategies such as Cornell note-taking, interactive notebooks, writing and vocabulary activities and team building to engage students in rigorous and deep learning of math concepts. The engaging, interactive lessons and collaborative activities demonstrate math strategies in real life applications. The 5th Grade Academy Math Summer Course is for Hillside, Walnut Glen, and Kimberlin Academy students interested in enrolling in Enriched Honors math in 6th Grade and is not for students who failed the STAAR math exam. Students must be recommended by their math teacher.

6th Grade Jackson MST to Algebra 1 Summer Acceleration Course

This program is by invitation only and is for select 6th grade students currently enrolled at Jackson MST that meet qualifying percentile rank performance on math MAP and are interested in enrolling in Algebra 1 as 7th graders during the upcoming school year. The curriculum used for this course is the AVID Bridge Algebra Readiness curriculum.

7th Grade AMS Algebra 1 Summer Acceleration Course

This program is by invitation only and is for select 7th grade students, currently enrolled at a middle school that offers Geometry, that meet qualifying percentile rank performance on both math and reading MAP and are interested in enrolling in Geometry as 8th graders during the upcoming school year. This course earns HS credit and students will need to successfully pass the Algebra 1 STAAR EOC.

Geometry Summer Acceleration Course

This program is for current 8th and 9th graders who are enrolled in Algebra 1 and are interested in enrolling in Algebra 2 during the upcoming school year, but are not participating in any AMS or Early College programs. This course is by invitation only and students will have to meet qualifying math and reading criteria and be recommended by their teacher. This course earns HS credit.
